At first, I chose "Hallelujah" as inspiration for this sketch because Sol's voice reminded me of Leonard Cohen - there’s something so deep and rich about it. But as I looked deeper into the lyrics and this particular part...

I did my best, it wasn't much

1. Zoo

"Wait… Your dad runs a zoo for the most expensive and difficult animals to keep in captivity? That's so…" Hazel searched a moment for the right word before settling on, "out of pocket."

"My grandpa started it, and it's not without ulterior motives," Dev told her honestly. But even after her very first trip to Dimmadome Zoo, Hazel stood by her belief that maintaining this place was the best investment Dale had ever made.

And maybe, leaning his folded arms against the narwhal exhibit rail, watching her bounce and babble to the pink elephant and green otter plushes in her hands, Dev thought so too.

2. Bear

"Uh, Dev? I don't think this is the best move we could make in this situation…"

"I've always wanted to pet the polar bear cubs," he said, already hopping the fence. "C'mon, Hazel! We have fairies!"

The purple au pair drone whirring behind him let out a groan. "Dev, we HAVE to talk to your dad about installing better railings in this place…"

3. Travel

"COSMO! WANDA! I WISH WE WERE IN TOKYO!!"

"Ooh! Make it a sushi place!"

Dev's next slamming footstep plunged into nothing. He flipped forward into frigid water… Except, through the water, like his whole body had just been splurted with gel and wrapped in itchy feathers. And... whiteness. Or pinkness? Dev stretched out a hand, feeling blindly in the rush of twisting space for Hazel, but he'd left his hands with the polar bears and screaming made no sound.

Then the world snapped into place again like a rubber band. When Dev blinked, it was dark… Maybe early morning. He found himself sitting upright on what felt like padded patio furniture, holding a menu in one hand and a purple paprika shaker in the other. Uh. Do sushi places usually have paprika shakers? From the looks of it, Peri had dropped him in an outdoor dining experience on some kind of waterfront, right across from Hazel… and a very confused polar bear. Who also had a menu in her big, clawed paws. Dev lifted his shades and squinted against the hazy fairy lights. Do bears like sushi? I guess it IS made of fish…

Hazel recovered faster. Opening her hand, she hissed to the salt and pepper shakers, "When I said 'We,' I didn't mean the bear."

"You should be more specific," the green shaker griped. But with a glimmer of his metal cap, the bear disappeared in a snappy ✨ Dimmadelphia poof! ✨

"40,000 yen per roll during dinner rush," Peri muttered. "And if I'm calling it out as pricy, that's saying something."

Adrenalin churned like whitewater rapids through his body, so Dev put down the sushi menu and took the deepest meditative breaths he could. Huh- Maybe Mr. Guzman's relaxation lessons were onto something. Hazel leaned her elbows on the table, hand on her forehead. Is she-?

"Are you okay, Hazel?"

Hazel took a big breath of her own, rolling through it like a cat in a sunbeam. She pushed back her hair. "I think so, yeah. It's just being chased across the ice caps by an angry mother bear. No big deal. You?"

"Yeah. I think so. Ihhh." Did she-? Should I-? Ah, too many thoughts bubbling up, overlapping- Dev took the leap; made the move: "I wish all Hazel's scratches were gone."

… Those were just from tripping mid-run while they escaped the bear, right?

5. Impress

"I'm impressed, Dev." Hazel smiled across the table, then tilted her pressed-together hands forward and dropped any glitter and fun in her eyes through the floor. "That was crazy, impulsive, and totally dangerous even for you."

"Uhh… I guess I might've got carried away back there." You know what would be really nice right about now? "I wish I had my tablet," he whispered to Peri, who sighed (as usual- overworked college student he was or what the ever) and poofed up exactly that.

Oh... My... God anon, I love this to the absolute death, This is the best idea of this month already. Being the newest member of the Guardians of the Galaxy was already tough enough, but being from Earth in a new setting was even more daunting for a kid. You were only 8 when you were kidnapped from Earth. Peter found you and took you in when you were 15, You were a bit of a rebellious teenager when you joined as well. Forming a friendship with Rocket as well, causing as much mischief as possible on the ship.

But one thing that kind of irritated you was Peter's constant pop culture references. He never fails to make at least one reference of any movie, game or song he knows.

"We're gonna need a bigger boat." He said as he saw fing fang foom in person.

"Really Pete, jaws ??" You grumbled at him in annoyance.

It went on and on and on, You almost retaliated in every way to try and get him to stop. But today was one of your outbursts.

You were helping rocket build one of his latest machines, Peter managed to walk by and see what you were doing.

"Wow, nice gizmo's you two. I do hope though that it doesn't go back in time to kill me" He smirked.

"Quill ya know I don't get those references of yours." Rocket said annoyingly.

"Yeah, Pete honestly they're outdated and dumb. Keep up with the times." You said without even looking at him.

He looked at you with such shock in his eyes, his references, outdated ?? no no no.

"What, My references are not outdated and dumb, They stand the test of time almost every single day"

"Yeah but doesn't mean you get to do it almost every single day !!!"

He was pretty shocked about your yelling, over something so small.

"Ok ok, I'll cut back on the references alright" He tried to calm you down.

"Yeah sure the last time you promised that it only lasted an hour, Pete just stop it ok !!!" You bolted off to your room and locked the door.

"Great, two moody humies on the ship" Rocket snorted as he went back to work.

Peter was at a loss for words about what he witnessed, You called his references outdated. This caused him to feel a little flat all week, You noticed this as he wasn't as chirpy as he used to be. He was just the strict leader.

Maybe you went a bit too far, so when he was on rotation one night, you got out of your room and went to the cockpit of the ship.

"Hey, Pete..." You softly greeted.

"Hey kiddo, You should be in bed"

"I know, but I wanted to talk to you."

You then went to your seat and turned to him, With an almost worried look on your face.

"What's wrong Pete ??"

He went a little bit quiet, as if almost not choosing to answer you, you turned around and stared out into the cosmos before he finally spoke up again.

"Do you ever consider... That these things may be the only things that remind you of home ??" He said as you turned around.

"These things that remind you of your past life when your lost in an unfamiliar place, where your scared. These reminders make you feel safe and happy... That's why I keep talking about my movies and games and music, That's why I keep referencing them." He said sadly.

You rubbed your face, feeling the guilt of yelling at him climb up on you. You too had things that made you feel happy and safe.

"Pete... I'm sorry"

"It's fine y/n..."

"No, It's not fine. I get where you're coming from. I too feel safe and happy when I think about things that make me happy." You said as tears started to swell in your eyes. "I'm sorry... I shouldn't have yelled at you or called your references dumb and outdated. My mind has been going through a lot and I don't know why I took it out on you. Please, Pete... I'm so sorry"

Peter looked at you sadly and stood up from his seat, gently walking over to you and wrapping your arms around you tightly. "It's ok kiddo... I forgive you" He said softly smiling.

The guilt lifted off your chest as you let out a shaky deep sigh. Your best friend forgave you, But you wanted to make it right with him.

"Pete... remember that device I found on Knowhere that had movies on it ??"

"Yeah, why ??"

"Well... I found the robocop movies on there. we have nothing to do tomorrow, wanna watch a marathon ??" You looked up at him, But from the way his smile widened, you felt happy yourself.

"Dead or alive your coming with me" He did his best robocop voice and ruffled your hair. "Of course I'm in"

You giggled as you fixed your hair. After the whole situation, you've grown to love Peter's references. He always knew how to make it... Well him But you wouldn't change peter at all for the entire galaxy. Not one bit.
